July 14, 2022 Verbal De-Escalation Skills

The Centre for Learning and Program Excellence is pleased to introduce a new blended delivery of the Verbal De-Escalation Skills course for all RRC employees. It’s a half day online (at your own pace) and a half-day in the virtual training room.

Course Overview

The ability to de-escalate out of a sticky conflict can be difficult. It’s that much harder when you add in the stress that you, your students, or your co-workers may be experiencing. Even calm people can become rattled when escalation occurs.

Verbal De-Escalation Skills is an interactive training workshop that will enable you to organize your thinking about how behavior escalates and how to respond appropriately in the moment using a mix of activities and instructional teaching. A testing component is provided at the end of the day, after which you will receive certification in this course from the Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI).

In this course, you will advance your skills to:
1. Recognize signs of escalation in another person
2. Respond with appropriate verbal de-escalation approaches
3. Understand the RRC procedures to follow when responding to escalating situations

Please note that physical interventions are not covered in this training course. If the session is full, you will be put on a waiting list.

Here's how it works:

  • All employees are welcome to register, both those who are new and those who have completed it in the past.
  • A total of 18 seats are available per delivery. You will be booked first come, first serve.
  • Once you are registered, the College purchases a “seat” for you. You will receive a link to access the online training.
  • You complete the online training at your own pace over a 10-day period. It will take approximately three hours to complete. The online training is dynamic, with videos, audio, and short self-assessments to check your knowledge. Captioning is provided for the entire course.
  • When you register for the online training, you are also automatically registered to attend a half-day virtual training for the date in your registration page. Participants will not be able to switch classroom dates once they have booked, as it is anticipated that all these sessions will fill up.
  • You will receive your link for the online training portion at least one week before the virtual in-person session.
  • During the virtual in-person training, you will apply the skills you have learned with your fellow classmates and facilitators in an active learning environment.
  • Following the training, you will receive a certificate from the Crisis Prevention Institute which is active for three years.
